Another Teaser from "For the Love of Empty Net Goals..."

Excerpt from chapter six, Special Spplement: Women Involved with Hockey, a Recent Timeline from the book, For the Love of Empty Net Goals by Lisa Ovens

Special Supplement:
Women Involved with Hockey: A Recent Timeline

Women and hockey have become more connected than ever before. The following pages highlight some noteworthy moments compiled from media headlines, milestone achievements, women on the blogosphere, marketing initiatives, hockey cheerleaders, female ice cleaners, and my personal favorite, hockey-themed beer commercials. Sometimes if you want to see how far women have really come, the garden variety hockey-themed beer commercial can tell the story.

Introduction
Women have been hockey fans and hockey players since the late 1800’s. A whole book could be written on our history with the game (actually one was written, but more about women playing the game: On the Edge: Women Making Hockey History by Elizabeth Etue and Magan K. Williams 1996). But for the sake of this book and limited space, I have only included a few moments covering women’s hockey.

Because For the Love of Empty Net Goals is from the female hockey fan’s perspective, I’ve stuck pretty close to issues and events surrounding us fans. Speaking in the third person, I list myself, but only a few times along the timeline to conserve space.

I did my best to capture as many moments as I could, but there might be some that I have missed, and I apologize. It begins in 2003, because this is when I started to pay attention to the stories and moments capturing our connection with the game.

It’s been interesting watching sports marketing catch up to female fans and seeing marketing people realize that there is indeed more than ten of us.
Forty appears to be our magic number...
If you’ve ever researched statistics about women, the magic number appears to be 40% or darn close to it. It comes up over and over again. For example...
• 41% of the NHL’s audience is women
• 40% of The Daily Show’s audience is women
• 40% of US gamers are women
* 40% of women order pizza after breaking up with their boyfriends
• 40% of women working in science and technology fields say they were discouraged to follow that type of work by their college professors
• 40% of corporate board members in Norway are women
• 40% of Super Bowl Sunday broadcast viewership is women

It is a curious number that forty percent. One has to wonder if we’ll ever get to fifty percent. Then that would be exactly half of something, or an equal part of something, if you will. Anyhow, let’s get at it...

June 2003 Red Wings Apparel Score’s With Women (Detroit News online article by Joanne C. Gerster)

The Detroit Red Wings acknowledge their female fans “leading to the creation of new products such as women-sized hockey jerseys.” According to the Wings senior director of concessions and marketing, Karen Wenson, “We are trying to lead the way in getting more products just for women.”
-Those Wings...they are so on top of everything they do.

June 2004 Nye Lavalle says Women Love Hockey…

In an Associated Press article published on tsn.ca titled Challenging Present, Future for NHL, Lavalle, president of the Sports Marketing Group, said “Women love hockey. I’ve talked to people in the front offices of a lot of sports and nobody understands who their fans are. Young men in the 18-34 year old group and women should be the people the NHL targets.”

-If the NHL follows Lavalle’s suggestion, they’ll have their work cut out for them as they try to reach out to such two different demographics all at the same time.

October 2004 Ivette Ricco, Publisher, Femmefan.com

Although I had first discovered Femmefan.com in 2004, the site has been live since 2000 – female football fans rejoice! However, femmefan.com covers hockey as well as every other major pro sport. Ivette Ricco, and her stable of female and male writers enjoy a large following as they present a complete sports site that specifically serves the female demographic. Ricco is often sought out for her opinions when it comes to female sport fandom and it’s not a wonder: she’s probably one of the first, if not the first woman to recognize and serve a woman’s love and commitment to sports via the Internet.

November 8 2005 Helene Elliott becomes the first female sports journalist to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

A long time sports writer (since the late Seventies, a time when women reporters were banned from locker rooms), Helene has reported on LA Kings hockey and practically every major hockey event since then. I couldn’t think of a more fabulous autobiography to read in sports than the one Helene would write. Let’s all hope she plans on it one day.

-Imagine what it was like for her to do her job in the late Seventies? It’s post game and you’ve got to get your quotes and your story filed, asap, and you have to wait outside while all the guys get in the locker room before you do. Then you just wait until the players are finished up in there and exit the door. Oh, the things women go through sometimes just to get the job done...

Lisa's Blog Break Excuse...NEW BOOK on the HORIZON!!!

                                             hockey author, Lisa Ovens

Yes, its true. After many delays, the much anticipated follow up to my first book, Hockey and High Heels - a Different Kind of Hockey Book is on a collision course with a date circled on my calendar (the date will be in October, just in time for the 2010/11 NHL season).

And because of that, I have been and will continue to devote my time to the production of what I feel will be another ground breaking hockey book.

There will be minimal posting here this summer, but I will keep you all informed on book two developments as they occur.

Please have a happy, safe summer - now go outside and PLAY!!!!

xxoo,

Lisa O.

Jay Mohr to Host NHL Awards and other NHL Tidbits

by Lisa Ovens

Wow...where have I been? Occasionally I have to ask myself that question after momentary lapses in posting. So to sum things up quickly...

Congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks on winning the Stanley Cup, and to the Philadelphia Flyers for trying so hard. Honorable mention goes to the Nashville Predators and the Vancouver Canucks for being knocked out of the playoffs by the eventual Windy City Champions (the San Jose Sharks, ah...not so much).

Now let's quickly remember the other playoff teams...Los Angeles Kings, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, Phoenix Coyotes, Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, Ottawa Senators, New Jersey Devils...woohoo everybody, woohoo.

Speaking of the Canadiens, the Montreal Gazette is reporting as of next season, the city will be billing the Canadiens for extra costs incurred by the city during the post season (translation: all that stuff related to rioting fans) Montreal Gazette

There are hockey movies, hockey songs, hockey poems and hockey plays. Now there will be a hockey musical, and it will debut during the Toronto International Film Festival this fall. Score: A Hockey Musical stars Noah Reid (a Toronto film actor, life long Leafs fan...quell surprise there) and features Olivia Newton John, Marc Jordan, Nelly Furtado, Stephen McHattie and Hawksley Workman. Barenaked Ladies contribute to the film's soundtrack (quelle suprise there...again) Hollywood North

Everyone knows the hockey season isn't officially over until we collectively groan and/or pick apart every little detail of the NHL Awards Show the following day so let's get started on that groaning and dissecting now...
Actor/ comedian Jay Mohr will be hosting The NHL Awards in Las Vegas Wednesday June 23rd. Sometimes I find Jay to be quite funny. I hope this non hockey fan has enough acting chops to act like a fan of the game during the telecast. For more potential groaning material...click NHL AWARDS.

World Hockey Summit - sounds serious, eh? Yes, this August a world hockey summit will take place in the Centre of the Universe (Toronto). The Summit leadership team includes Daniel Alfredsson, Steve Yzerman, Hayley Wickenheiser, and Brian Burke. Sponsored by Molson (because hockey and beer go so well together) the summit gathering will take on issues involving women's hockey, international competitions, player safety and skill development. Date: August 23-26th, 2010.World Hockey Summit .

An Absolutely Smokin' Hot NHL Playoff Collectible!!

hockey inspired pipe carving. All carvings by Andrew of Salt Spring Island

by Lisa Ovens

In keeping with the hockey art photo theme I have going on this playoffs...

Just stick it in this pipe and smoke it! Being an Island Girl at heart (no, not New York Islanders - I grew up on an island surrounded by other islands on the South Coast of British Columbia) I have always been a fan of beautiful and quirky Salt Spring Island, and the various delights found there. I mean isn't the Chevres (soft goat cheese) from Salt Spring Island Cheese Company  absolutely divine?

Well the above wood pipe resembling the most revered trophy in all of pro sports is another delight to behold. Smoke or no smoke, it would be a sweet hockey collectible to add to your collection

Hand made on beautiful Salt Spring Island, BC , this pipe is made of pure Canadian Maple just in time for the playoffs! Perfect one of a kind gift for a hockey fan!

The unique pipe collection also includes an Olympic inspired Torch pipe...

And a nod to the film, The Big Lebowski...

Pens/ Habs Game Seven:There’s No Crying in Hockey

by Jan Snyder

Pens Lose Game 7
Montreal wins series

However, there is room for a tear or two for the old Arena. Somehow this loss bookends Mellon Arena’s many years. The Pens lost the first game played there and now have lost the last ever. Lots of memories over those many years. I’ll always remember going to games with my Dad, my Mom, my brothers, my sister, my daughter, my son, my son-in-law, and with all my friends, especially Karen and Pat, and all the fun we always had, win or lose. I will treasure those memories of watching #66 work his magic, #68 and his flowing locks, and of course enjoying the current crop of Penguins.

As this wacky playoff season goes on, the number eight seed advances in the east. Pittsburgh starts their offseason after powerhouse teams like New Jersey, Washington and Buffalo started theirs. Odd turn of events all the way around.

But let’s hand it to Montreal and especially to Halak. He’s proved now that he’s the real deal stopping the best players on Washington and Pittsburgh. P.K. Subban will be fun to watch for years to come and we know how good Hal Gill can be, but we prefer seeing him do what he does when he’s on our team. I agree with the announcers who said Pittsburgh didn’t lose, Montreal won. Very true as they played a team game and did what they had to do all the way through the series. How many times did I jump off the couch, thinking Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Gonchar, etc. had scored a “sure” goal, only to watch Halak gobble up the puck?

Losing possession of the Stanley Cup is hard, but makes us appreciate how lucky we were to have it for one season. The Pens will come back strong next year in their new home and will want to start with a win and a winning season – maybe another Stanley Cup season?

This may sound strange, but I am jumping on the Montreal bandwagon. I am, as Lisa will attest, a proponent of having as many Canadian teams in the playoffs as possible. After all, it’s their game, so they should be participating. Since they are the only team from Canada left, I will now be their fan. I can’t root for Boston or Philly (that would be impossible, not to mention sacrilegious), so if I want an eastern team to win the Cup, it may as well be the one that knocked out my team from the tournament. Congrats, Montreal!

And in the west – no Pens fan wants to watch Marion Hossa hoist the Cup, so we’ll be pulling for the Sharks.

The boys had a great year and gave us many more exciting memories. Watching Sid fight until the final game for the scoring championship was one. Now they can get some rest and be back in the fall, on a really fresh sheet of ice, ready to rock us again!

Thanks, Pens, it was a great run!

Canucks vs. Blackhawks Game Six: Canucks Eliminated, Lisa says "Go SHARKS!"

Blue Canuck by Lisa Ovens

by Lisa Ovens

To help ease the pain of watching my home team, the Vancouver Canucks lose game six, 5-1, I cleaned my bathroom. And I phoned my brother. But I didn’t reach for a cup cake, so, uh, that’s a good thing.

Same day (May 11th) same game (game six) same team doing the eliminating (Blackhawks) Geez, who writes these scripts? For some reason, and I haven’t put my finger on it yet, but after this year’s “Annual Blackhawks eliminate Canucks Event” I don’t feel as bad as I did last year. And judging by the looks and comments from the post game Canucks, it didn’t seem to hurt them as much as it did last year.

To sum it up quickly right here, right now in no particular order: yes, we missed a player like Willie Mitchell, we blew it in games three and four on the composure front, people played hurt, Luongo tried and looked great at times, and then stunk it up on others, the Blackhawks are a good team, Byfuglien ran over Edler who doesn't return to play, the one goal we got from O'Brien was sweet, all hale Sami Salo for playing after the testicle injury from game five, why couldn’t we win at home where lots and lots of winning occurred all year, oh how this sucks, especially for the fans in the stands who cheered even when it was 5-1, but I believed, and who says you have to ever stop believing.

In the West it’s a no brainer, I ‘m jumpin’ on the San Jose Shark bandwagon in the Western Conference Final. As I pointed out in a recent column, the San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks were the last two competitors in the Semi Finals that haven’t won a Stanley Cup. Let's see the Sharks get closer to the promised land. Like I’m going to cheer for the Blackhawks- not!

My mother passed away before the beginning of the regular season, and I made it through my first Canuck season without her as my game buddy. I know wherever she is, she’ll be a little sad that the boys came up short again. And then she’ll say let’s look forward to next season.

And I shall :o) because I am crazy. You have to be a little crazy to follow this team.
