Eat Pray Love Hockey: Part One

She was sick. It came on when she was at the Calgary Flames/ Canucks game with Michelle. It was the first Canuck home game of this new year and it was swell of Michelle to treat her to a hockey game. She put on a brave face. Surely the hockey would help.
Michelle, a Flames fan was sympathetic. Nice of her considering the Canucks easily beat her Flames 4-1, and somewhat embarrassing them in the process.

Lisa: I’m so sick.
Michelle: I know you are.
Lisa: But the Canucks sure look like winners…for now.
Michelle: it’s not easy being a Flames fan right now, with all the Oli Jokinen joke photos and gifs out there. He’s my fave, you know. Did you say something?
Lisa: Oli “Joke” inen. Haha.

photo below from HF Boards

She made her way home on the bus. The Triple O burger weighed her down. He body resonated with every movement. A fever was coming on. Feed a cold, starve a fever? As full as she was, with the burger and yet another convincing Canuck win, she never felt emptier.

The weekend came and she was bedridden. But at least she made it to the doctor. The huge pills ( take two, with food, by mouth, once per day until finished) left a horrible metallic taste in her mouth.

She set up her netbook attached to a large monitor on the coffee table so she could watch the Canucks/ Red Wings game while curled up on the sofa. This was good. At least she got out of bed for Hockey Night in Canada.

As sick as she was she enjoyed the Elliot Friedman piece on Red Wings head coach, Mike Babcock. She always liked Babcock and thought his voice and manner of speaking was so unique, just like her voice and manner of speaking.

Lisa: Wow, Babcock and I should be hosting a show together – our voices together, alone, would kill!

As it turned out, she watched the Babcock segment several times over the next week, only because it was a great moment in sandwich…and it lifted her spirits from the sad place that was her soul...

Great Moments in Sandwich: Mike Babcock Makes a Sandwich

by Lisa Ovens

Who would of thought the subject of sandwiches would come up twice at this blog? Actually it would be three times including my review of the Tim Horton’s breakfast sandwich in the old school Lisa’s Lounge. Okay...if you really must...here is the link to Old School Lisa’s Lounge and the column with the breakfast sandwich review. It fits in right now because Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and that was my 2007 Valentine's column post.

The other Great Moments in Sandwich occurred earlier this season, with the recipe for Sidney Crosby’s favourite sandwich involving Dempster’s bread (there was also a contest to meet Sidney in on that). As far as I know, I didn't win the contest to meet Sid in March. Now you have to wonder how Crosby will be feeling at that point in time due to the effects of his first concussion. They say its a mild one, which is a good thing, but it still doesn't solve the problems surrounding head injuries...

"The 43 concussions sustained since the exhibition season began in September puts the league on a pace for about 77 for the regular season, near the average of 75 in recent seasons and below the 82 last season, according to Dr. Ruben Echemendia, a neuropsychologist who directs the joint N.H.L.-N.H.L. Players’ Association concussion working group". From a NY Times article by Jeff Klein

Before the subject of concussions de-rails this post on sandwiches...on to Babcock's Great Moment in Sandwich...
...because unfortunately for Sid the Kid, Mike Babcock making a sandwich is the crowned KING of Great Moments in Sandwich.

Okay I got a problem here guys. I got warm toast and no butter, man. This is a major crisis for me. Unbelievable.”

-Mike Babcock

HNIC's Elliotte Friedman's story on the coaching ways of Mike Babcock revealed more than the dedicated and hard working personality of the Red Wing's Stanley Cup winning coach. It showed how Babcock gingerly dries lettuce in a tea towel, and how he reacts when things go horribly wrong in the kitchen...
Watch Elliotte Friedman's HNIC Inside Hockey piece on Mike Babcock here

That aired on Sat. January 8th, 2011prior to the Canucks/ Red Wings tilt at Roger's Arena in Vancouver. The depleted Wings beat Vancouver 2-1 (shoot out victory). It was an exciting game to watch. After seeing so much Mike Babcock in one night, I was reminded of a quote of his...

The effort has got to equal the opportunity

He said that way back in 2003, when the team he was coaching, the Ducks, had lost their third straight game in the Stanley Cup Final. (They would battle back and win the next three, but ultimately fell to the New Jersey Devils in game seven).

If there is one saying the Vancouver Canucks could tattoo on their hands or scribble on their gloves, it would be that, the effort has got to equal the opportunity. Keep saying it boys, over and over, with each shift you take...imagine Babcock's voice, his John Wayne like tones (but a more hyper sounding Duke? No, maybe not like John Wayne.Geez who does he sound like?)  The effort has got to equal the opportunity...

Not a bad quote. A quote we could all remember with each task we do. Just make sure there's butter handy ;o)

Two of these teams are not like the Others...

by Lisa Ovens

Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens, San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings, Vancouver Canucks, Chicago Blackhawks.

Can you figure out which two teams are different than the others and why? The answer is below this mini Don Cherry Suit Fest...

The two different teams are the San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks. What they have in common goes beyond the finned, ocean dwelling creatures on their sweaters. Neither of these teams has won a Stanley Cup.

Based on the last few cup winning teams, it's a good thing for the Canucks and the Sharks that Marion Hossa doesn’t play for either of them...

Red Wings: one  Penguins: one
Marion Hossa: nothing

The San Jose Sharks are now one step closer to making the Stanley Cup Final after knocking out the Detroit Red Wings last night. We can't say the same for the Vancouver Canucks, as their Stanley Cup Final campaign is on the ropes, down three games to one against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Canucks need to win three more games this week to stay alive this post season. Today is the first day of three possible judgment days. If the Canucks can't win game five for themselves, maybe the could win one for their moms.

Happy Mother's Day everyone :o)

GAME DAY: Canucks vs. Blackhawks Game Five

Imagine all the rituals, superstitions and lucky objects in action right now in Canuckland

Canucks lost game four 7-4
Blackhawks lead series 3-1

by Lisa Ovens

According to NHL.com’s playoff stats: teams have trailed 3-1 in a best-of-seven series a total of 229 times and have come back to win the series on 20 occasions or 8.7% of the time. And three of the twenty belong to the Vancouver Canucks (1992, 1994 and 2003). In fact, the Canucks have the most success at this than any other team! What’s bothersome is why we have to wind up in these predicaments in the first place.

A Wondertwin wonders Yes...how did we wind up here again?

The most recent successful series comeback was the 2003 playoffs, the opponent: the St. Louis Blues. The Blues were a very good team, and at the time had the record for most consecutive playoff appearances out of all pro sports (at the time it was something like 23 years in a row qualifying for the playoffs). The Canuck/ Blues rivalry had been heating up all season long with the two teams split for wins, and the final outing was considered “the game of the year” in the press.

For the Canucks, that first round series was off to a horrible start because they lost game one (6-0) at home. I was there and it was a heart breaker. They did nothing right and were completely owned by the Blues. They managed to barely win game two, but then lost the next two on the road in St. Louis. With the Canucks on the ropes for game five at home, I decided to bet on the Canucks to win the game. I could have made that bet with many people because nobody believed the team would win. I went to the game, and sure enough they won. Back to St. Louis for game six and they won again. Home to Vancouver for game seven and they won the series.

So what happened to create that glorious turn around? Well the pressure was off for sure. I remember seeing a clip of the team strolling into GM Place on game day and they were loose, smiling and relaxed. But something else was going on over at the other bench worth noting: the flu was spreading around the mighty Blues team.

Today the Canucks are waist deep in a nasty team melt down and it’s already a game up over last year’s Blackhawk series melt down (we had two wins at this point last year and were eventually dispatched from the playoffs after game six).

So what can Canuck nation hope for this time around?

The Blackhawks might not have the flu, but the Orcas can hope for some three alarm hangovers...

Maybe the fun, young Bhawks, tickled pink after taking both games in Van, went out and tied one on Saturday night in Chicago. Let’s face it; those boys have to be thrilled that they’ve made fools out of the Canucks and their fans, and they did it so, so convincingly. What fresh faced group of young guns wouldn’t grab a limo, lots of beer and take their shirts off in celebration?

Road Trip

The Canucks have to happy to get out of the insane asylum that the city of Vancouver has become. I have to write a separate column covering the mountain of stupidity we’ve ascended (most of it is courtesy of the media) or else this one would be too long. In my opinion the circus off of the ice is as bad if not worse than the three ringer on the ice. I know if I were the Canucks, I’d more than pleased to get on a plane and return to the “Mad House” that is United Center. I’m sure it will be calmer there for them, if you can imagine that!

Mikael Samuelsson Makes a Difference...

This guy won a Stanley Cup in 2008 with arguably the best team, top to bottom, over the last 20 years. Could he possibly have some magic Red Wing dust left on him to sprinkle around the Canucks locker room? Could he have some words to say that explain how a successful team like the 2008 Red Wings would deal with the Canucks current woes?

We’ve Used Up ALL the Bad Everything

Could it be that the Canucks have gotten everything bad that any hockey player could ever imagine happening out of the way in these last three games, leaving the team with nothing but good stuff on the horizon? Is it possible that Daniel Sedin has no more potential for taking penalties, because he’s already spent his quota for round two? And Roberto Luongo has realized he’s way overdrawn at the goals allowed bank and will madly start saving them again?

Will the pucks grow tired of bouncing the other way?

Is the entire team finally done talking and ready to just shut up and play?

The clock is ticking...GO CANUCKS!!!

Here’s To Team Canadas and Original SIXY!!

hockey art. artist on left, mark gaskin. on right, lisa ovens

by Lisa Ovens

Two Canadian based NHL teams advanced to Round Two: cue the “All Canadian Stanley Cup Final” talk. Yeah, a Canucks/ Canadiens final would be kind of neat, but, it would only last four, maybe five games, making it dull, and fan created damage to the losing team’s city, Montreal would be in the millions.

Four out of six Original Six teams are vying for a place in the Eastern or Western Conference Final. It’s Original Sixy, Original Sexy!

The Series

Montreal Canadiens vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Canadiens dropped the first game to the Pens. But the hab fans’ red jerseys sure stood out well in the Igloo’s White Out, if that means anything! The Habs were the last Canadian based NHL team to win the Stanley Cup (1993). It was their twenty-fourth Cup celebration. Unfortunately that stat will remain unchanged.

Hey cute and cuddly Penguins, What’s up with you and only playing Canadian teams this year? First you knock out the Ottawa Senators, you’ll most likely send the Canadiens packing next. The only thing that will be standing in the way of you and the last Canadian team to tussle with will be either a blip of flyer Orange or Bruin yellow. Be afraid, Canuck fans, the Penguins are gunning for us!!!

Chicago Blackhawks vs. the Vancouver Canucks

Chicago is the runt of the original Sixy litter. They’ve been around forever but have only won three Stanley Cups. The Blackhawks bandwagon has quickly filled up over the last couple of years for two reasons: sucking for years plus high draft picks equals some great young talent to mold, and the death of owner Bill Wirtz and the stingy managerial ways.

I guess as far as playoff rivalries go this year, the Hawks vs. Canucks has the freshest of bad blood. There’s a laundry list of incidents from the 2009 Playoff’s round two. The BHawks won that series in six, and this time around, we can expect the Canucks will be on the warpath, righting as many wrongs along the way. The Canucks will find a way to win the series, but it’s going to be a rough ride.

Detroit Red Wings vs. The San Jose Sharks

Let’s face it: The Detroit Red Wings are the Original Sexy of the Original Sixy! The eleven time Stanley Cup champions (four wins since 1997) have brought out the Wing Envy of many. And here’s a cool snippet of history: The first woman to have her name engraved on the Stanley Cup is Marguerite Norris, president of the Detroit Red Wings in 1954/ 1955 season. I am going to quote myself from my round one prediction: “It's hard for me not to pick the Red Wings to win this series. They just know how to deal, those Wings. They deal with everything so well; whatever the storm, they deal with it. They are by definition, Retrosexual Men.

The San Jose Sharks, as rested as they are, don’t have the “deal with it” trait to the extent the Wings have, even though the Sharks won game one of this series. But you go ahead and try your darndest, Sharkies!

Boston Bruin vs. Philadelphia Flyers

When I think of the Boston Bruins I often think of Don Cherry and Bobby Orr. Now I think of Tuukka Rask and Milan Lucic. But can these two guys and the rest of the B’s win a sixth cup for this Original Sixy born in the year of the Rat? If you think Tuukka Rask is a cool name with all that U and K action, check out this former Bruin name: Dit Clapper (Aubrey Victor, given names) Dit Clapper played 20 seasons (1927-1947) wore number five and after Yzerman and Bourque, is next on longest serving captain on the NHL list.

The Philadelphia Flyers have not met the Bruins in the post season since 1978. Both teams are going to be playing a “so you think you’re tough” kind of game in this series. Which ever team is left standing could be easy pickings in the Eastern Conference Final for the Penguins. The Flyers have had the longest lay off this post season (nine days), and because of that I am going to give the Bruins the edge.

First Round...how’d I do? I picked the Pens, the Canucks, the Flyers and the Wings to win round one. Four right out of eight!!

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are HERE!!!

by Lisa Ovens

I can't be the only chick out there who sets up a second TV on the entertainment shelf mid April every year, am I? Woot! The 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs have arrived!!

I enjoyed CBC Sports playoff intro featuring the sound bytes of champions expressing feelings about their playoff experiences. And as always, I pay attention to Hockey Night in Canada host Ron Maclean's first words on the playoffs. he likes to be eloquent, that Ron, and he always skates dangerously close to becoming a parody of himself with his poignant words...

"It's not the mountains we trip over, it's the pebbles."

"Tell someone about the things they treasure most, and you are on the road to their heart."

And on that note...let's talk Brady Bunch!! (like MacLean could pull off a seque like this)

The Seeding of Playoff teams, According to The Brady Bunch Kids

Eastern Conference

Marcia and Greg Teams
Washington Capitals
 New Jersey Devils
 Buffalo Sabres

Cindy and Bobby teams
Boston Bruins
Philadelphia Flyers
Montreal Canadiens

Peter and Jan teams
Ottawa Senators
Pittsburgh Penguins

Western Conference

Marcia and Greg Teams
San Jose Sharks
Chicago Blackhawks
Vancouver Canucks

Cindy and Bobby Teams
Los Angeles Kings
Nashville Predators
Colorado Avalanche

Peter and Jan Teams
Phoenix Coyotes
Detroit Red Wings

Wow...imagine that, the mighty Detroit Red Wings and defending Stanley Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins are Peter and Jan Teams. It just doesn't make sense!

Wondering what the seeding of playoff teams and the Brady Bunch have in common? The only way to know the answer is to read Hockey & High Heels!

Lisa's First Round Picks : Eastern Conference

Senators vs. Penguins

I do like the fact that Senators goaltender, Brian Elliot counts his childhood memories pretending he's playing in a game seven of the Stanley Cup Final during neighbourhood road hockey games as "playoff experience". It's rather endearing, but may not be enough to keep the Penguins from taking over this series.

So, I'll take the Penguins, but only because deep down inside, the boys aren't ready to leave Mellon Arena just yet. (These playoffs games will be the last time they go to work at the Igloo, before moving across the street to the new arena for the 2010/11 season)

Flyers vs. Devils

I like the Flyers, because I lika the Orange Crush. That's a silly reason. I really don't know what else to say, as these two teams are my least favourite in the east. The Flyers are the lesser of two evils...get it? Devils, evil. Oh, whatever.

Capitals vs. Canadiens

Capitals...because if they don't, they'll be another step closer to becoming the "Sharks of the East".

Bruins vs. Sabres

For Ryan Miller's sake, I pick the Sabres. he was so awesome for team USA during the 2010 Winter Olympics, I'd like to see the city of Buffalo revel in some glory.

Western Conference

Avalanche vs. Sharks

What do the Avs have to lose here? Nothing. Wouldn't it be funny if that is the main reason they beat the Sharks? Seriously, I am cheering for the Avs to stop the all of the pundit wondering that goes on about the Sharks committment to winning in the post season once and for all.

Predators vs. Blackhawks

The Predators...they want to experience the "Peter and Jan Brady" round of the SC Playoffs, the Semi Finals, for the first time, really bad. (Could I use more commas??) Seriously though I admit I am still bitter from last year's playoffs and want those plucky Preds to boot the Hawks into next season, pronto!

Kings vs. Canucks

I am so happy for the Los Angeles Kings fans (especially for the ones that I know personally) that they will enjoy some playoff action after all of these years!! Yes, exactly one round of playoff action before my Canucks move onto the second round. Sorry girls, but if my Nucks don't get their butts into the Conference Finals, I just might have to become a Kings season ticket holder. That means someone has to get me a job down there and help me find a place to live. Girls, do you really want that on your list of things to do???

Red Wings vs. Coyotes

Whoever wins, I just want this to be a full seven game experience for the resilient hockey fans in Phoenix. They deserve that more than most people know. And by most people I mean those ones who are convinced there are only fourteen hockey fans in that city. BTW, Nice whiteout, Coyotes faithful!
It's hard for me not to pick the Red Wings to win this series. They just know how to deal, those Wings. They deal with everything so well; whatever the storm, they deal with it. They are by definition, Retrosexual Men.

Brendan Shanahan Retires

by Lisa Ovens

Brendan Shanahan played a whopping 21 seasons in the NHL, and he had this to say...

"I would like to thank my family and all of the friends who have helped me achieve and maintain my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League. I am enormously grateful to all of my coaches and teammates I've had the privilege of learning from and playing along side of, throughout my career. While I always dreamed of playing in the NHL, I can't honestly say that I would have ever imagined that I'd be this fortunate and blessed. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped me fulfill this dream."

Here's an interesting Shanahan statistic: he leads the league with 17 career Gordie Howe hat-tricks. That's pretty impressive stuff. Plus Shanahan is the only goal scorer to score over 600 goals and tally over 2000 penalty minutes. (total goals 656, points 1354). Shanahan is one of only 22 hockey players in the world who have won a Stanley Cup, and Olympic Gold Medal and a World Championship.

Teams Brendan played for...

New Jersey Devils
New York Rangers

Detroit Red Wings  - won three Stanley Cups here- woot!
Hartford Whalers
St. Louis Blues

Brendan Shanahan may have retired from the game, but the hockey world should hope he finds a position where he may offer some input and guidance to the National Hockey League or the NHL Player's Association or both.

During the2004/05 NHL Lockout he intstigated a summit with a prime directive calling for some desparately needed changes to the game. This event led to the forming of the Competition Committee and those changes being implemented, making the game what it is today.

Above all of that, Brendan Shanahan is a really funny guy :o)

Best of Luck, Shanny!

The above photo: The Brendan Shanahan card is a cut out hockey card from a box of Kraft Dinner. This was part a promotional series of hockey cards from "The 1998/99 Kraft Collection." My sweet Mom, Stella cut out the Shanahan card and gave it to me.

Shanahan Swag from Lisa's Hockey Collection...

The New Team Canada Jersey Look

By Lisa Ovens

I think Head Coach Mike Babcock will like the new Team Canada Hockey Jersey design; it’s so very Red Wing! At least that’s the first thing I thought when I saw it...this new look screams Detroit Red Wings, and there isn’t anything wrong with that.

The red & white, basic stripes, logo in the middle look should put Babcock completely at ease over the next six months as he tackles his extra curricular 2010 Olympic duties away from the mighty Red Wings organization. Some might say this jersey is simplicity at it’s finest.

Team Canada’s new Maple Leaf logo is actually loaded with design, but it’s understated in its presentation: within the border you’ll find images of the Thunderbird (magical, powerful) the Eagle (great strength, courage and leadership), the Ocra (traveler, guardian, symbol of good) the Beaver (creative, artistic, determination), and what appears to be a Moose (meaning: really freakin' big!), all drawn in First Nations style of art, along with smaller maple leaves representing gold medal wins in hockey. There you have it: a little Canadian hockey history and Canadian Aboriginal culture on display.

In other Team Canada news...A Women's International tournament will get underway in Vancouver Monday August 31st to Sunday September 6th 2009. It's the Hockey Canada Cup, with Team USA, Team Sweden, Team Finland and Team Canada facing off at General Motors Place. This event will give everyone a taste of what it's going to be like in just under six months when the 2010 Olympics arrive. Between the four countries, we will be seeing the best female players in the world, and tickets start at only CDN$10.00!!! And we'll get to see the new jerseys in action. What It Takes to Win

What It Takes To Win

By Jen (Jan Snyder's daughter!)

Last year, the Pens and the Red Wings met in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time. And while the Pens had an amazing run through the post season and seemed like they were almost invincible, the Red Wings were too much for our young and inexperienced team (at least in the finals anyway) and we lost a heartbreaking Game 6 on Mellon Arena ice. As our team left the ice in defeat, the Red Wings hoisted the Cup in triumph. It was almost too much to take.

A few weeks later, my favorite band, Journey, released a new album. One of the songs on that album, “What It Takes To Win” really struck a chord with me. After the exhilarating playoff run and gut-wrenching loss, it was the perfect song - although I didn’t realize how perfect until this year’s playoffs.

Through the opening line to the end of the song, I could visualize the entire Pens’ 2007-2008 season. In my mind I could put an entire montage of moments together that would fit right along with the lyrics - especially moments from the Playoffs.

The first verse goes something like this:

Day has come,
you’re prepared,
electricity in the air.
Feel the calm,
feel the rush,
you want to leave victorious.
When you look in their eyes,
they want you gone,
they want to take the prize.

I could just imagine flashes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal or Max Talbot getting ready to take the opening face off in the elimination game of the series - flashing from them to the various Red Wing centers who would take the draw against them.

The second verse is a run of the clichés that we all hear during these great sporting events...

Seal the deal,
get it done.
Earn the right to say you’ve won.
Work it out,
sacrifice,
someone’s gonna have to pay the price.
Face to face,
stand your ground,
stay in the zone,
now don’t back down.
More than pride,
you defend,
fighting hard until the very end.

During this verse I think of Ryan Malone taking a puck in the face, the “Sacrifice” t-shirts the Pens wore proudly last year and “the shift” by Brooks Orpik - you know, the one where he checked the Wings players five times in about 20 seconds.

But the most prophetic verse is the chorus and I did not understand its full meaning until this playoff year...

When you learn to lose.

You know what it takes to win.
Wanna go the distance with a hunger that never ends.
When you want to prove, you’re the best there’s ever been.
They can knock you down, you’re on your feet again,
‘cause you know what it takes to win.

Last season, losing to Detroit in Game 6 for the Cup was devastating. But it taught the Pens and the fans what it takes to win. We were knocked down in Game 5 against the Flyers, down 3-0 in the second period. If the Pens lost, their season was over. But they got back up and rallied to beat the Flyers and moved on to the Capitals.
We were down in that series too. Coming back home for Game 3, the Caps were up 2-0 in the series but because we knew what it took to win, we were able to overcome that too and moved on to Carolina.

We kept the hunger going against the Canes and swept that series to face our foes in Detroit once again for the Cup. That series didn’t start too well either. Down 2-0 in the series, the Pens won Games 3 and 4, had a terrible and forgettable Game 5, then rallied in Game 6 to force Game 7. That’s when last year’s loss, turned into knowing how to win and the Pens were able to hang on to win the Cup and prove they are the best.

So for the conclusion of my montage, I see the last second effort of the puck fluttering along the goal line last year, but staying out. I see the Wings celebrating the win and the Pens hanging their heads. I see a shot of one of the Pens wearing this year’s playoff t-shirt that said, “Ya Hungry?” I see the last-second save on Lidstrom by a diving Fleury in Game 7, and the Pens celebrating with the Cup.

I see the 375,000 Pittsburgh fans lining the streets for the victory parade. Then as the song ends, I see a fade-out of Sid the Kid raising the Cup proudly above his head, proving the Pens are the best and that they learned what it takes to win.

Stanley Cup Final: Game Seven, Pens vs. Wings

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS – Queen

by Jan Snyder

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world –

Oh, what a journey and what a great ending! Although the first game seems like it was only a few weeks ago, now the season is over – after 87 games. We as fans couldn’t have asked for any more from our team. They did everything they had to do and their persistence brought Stanley back home to Pittsburgh where he belongs. He’s been gone a long time and welcoming him back to town will be so much fun.
Max Talbot 2, Detroit Redwings, 1. What a game Max had and to hear him talking after the game about his relationships with Fleury and Sid was amazing. I remember the last two times the Pens won the Cup how perfect it seemed to see Mario raise it above his head. I have to say I had the same feeling when I saw Sid do it last night.

How lucky are we to be fans who have seen Mario and Jagr and now Sid and Geno? Speaking of Geno, winning the MVP Award for the playoffs was the perfect ending for him. He meant so much to the team the whole year and his stellar play every night was something we shouldn’t take for granted.

Fleury? What an amazing guy. To be pulled out of a game and then come back and play two of the best games of his life – amazing. We have to mention the Coach too. Dan Bylsma’s youth, his enthusiasm and his steady hand guiding the players was such a big part of this victory.

All the defensemen have to be commended for the job they did all throughout the playoffs. They scored, they checked, they hit, -- they did it all and so well.
As I’ve said many times before, this is the ultimate team game and to win the Cup takes the ultimate team. These guys clearly played for each other.

Now only five short months after the Super Bowl Parade, we have another parade to look forward to – in much nicer weather.

Just a word about Marian Hossa – he made the wrong choice, but if he hadn’t left, we wouldn’t have had Guerin, Fedotenko, Kunitz or Satan. Poetic justice, right? The Pens fans at the Joe tonight were loud. I can’t believe the Detroit fans didn’t try to drown out the “Let’s Go, Pens” chant. Of course, I can’t believe the people in Detroit booed Sid getting hurt either – did they all live in Philadelphia in a prior life?

I enjoyed seeing Mario have that Cup over his head again and seeing Eddie Johnson do it again was special too.

Thanks to all of you who’ve read these playoff columns and thanks to Lisa Ovens for giving me a forum to write about our fantastic Pens.

I’m exhausted and running out of words to say! But we ARE the Champions – that says it all.

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world –

Are You Ready???

ARE YOU READY???

by Jan Snyder

So here we are – Game Seven! I’m not a big fan of numbers, but this one really struck me when I heard it today.

Throughout the playoff season, so far there have been 86 games played. Meaning Game Seven Friday night in Detroit will be Game 87! What an omen that could be for Sid. If I lived in Pittsburgh, I think I would play that number on Friday.

Watching Sidney Crosby being interviewed after practice today, I could see the gleam in his eye. The excitement leading up to the game is palpable and evident on the player’s faces on both sides. Coach Bylsma is covering his emotions well but you know the butterflies in his stomach tomorrow will feel like birds. They are saying all the right things, but you know that they are thrilled beyond words to be in the situation they are in right now.

The entire 2008-09 NHL season comes down to this game. Remember when the Pens were so far down in the standings that we weren’t sure they would make the playoffs? Remember Coach Thierren, after he was dismissed, saying this team was too good not to make the playoffs? Remember the fun as they won and won and won and climbed their way back up the ladder? Remember the great series against the Flyers? The Caps? The Hurricanes? And now we are at the pinnacle.

Hopefully our two-headed monster will be roaring, Flower will be in full bloom, and Staal and Kennedy (Kennedy!) will continue to be the best third line ever. I love Mike Lange’s latest goal sayings for Crosby and Malkin and I sure hope he gets to use them in Game Seven. “Slap me silly, Sidney!” and “Make me a milkshake, Malkin! But I’ll settle for “He shoots and scores!” or “Scratch my back with a hacksaw.” Just so he gets to use a few and we get a few more goals than the Wings.

Tomorrow at lunch time, I’m heading to a local Pittsburgh establishment called Steel City Pizzaria here in Texas. It’s a full-fledged Pittsburgh sports bar and restaurant with Penguin, Steeler, Pirate, Pitt, Penn State, etc. decorations. The place is of course run by a family from Meadville, PA. Three other Pittsburghers who I work with are going too. We will have a root beer toast to the team and a mini pep rally. We’re taking our rally towels! Hope all of you will be doing something similar because tomorrow is going to be a long, long day – right up until the drop of the puck!

When I tore off my desk calendar page today, the little blurb read: In 1980, the Pittsburgh Penguins proudly pulled on black and gold uniforms after the Steelers won the Super Bowl and the Pirates won the World Series.
Another omen? The Steelers did win the Super Bowl this season after all.

What a terrific season it’s been. But after Game Seven, hockey is over until September. What will we do with ourselves throughout the summer? Hopefully, we can remember dancing with Lord Stanley.

LET’S GO, PENS!!

Stanley Cup Final: Game Six, Wings vs. Pens

Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees

by Jan Snyder

And were stayin alive, stayin alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin alive, stayin alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin alive

Coach “Disco Dan” can dance to this tune tonight after watching his fantastic team fight to stay alive and play for the Cup on Friday night!

Spurred on again by a rabid crowd, the Pens played their game and outplayed the Wings. Despite two power plays in the first period, the boys from the ‘burg couldn’t score and the period ended with no scoring on either side.

In the second, the fun began! Jordan Staal came down the ice with one goal in mind – scoring a goal! And score he did. After Osgood gave up a juicy rebound on Staal’s first shot, Jordan pounced on it and drove it home, with assists from Kennedy and Scuderi. The crowd roared its approval and the hometown team was up 1-0.

Soon after, Zetterberg came in on Fleury but the puck hit the post. Meanwhile at the other end, the Pens had two pop ups that missed the net but could have gone in with a little luck.

The third period was the most exciting – and most nerve wracking. Tyler Kennedy (Kennedy!) imitated Staal and scored his goal on his second try too sending the Mellon Arena faithful into a state of pandemonium! Talbot and Fedotenko produced the assists.

But the next goal came from the stick of Kris Draper and with a good bit of the third period left to play, it was now 2-1. Quickly the Pens took two penalties, one on Geno and one on Guerin, but Fleury was magnificent – with a little help from Scuderi who blocked a shot that would have surely gone into the yawning net. And again near the end of the game, Scuderi imitated a goaltender as he helped stop several pucks that could have gone in, but happily, didn’t!

What is there to say about Brooks Orpik? He played so well and seeing him get beaten for a breakaway near the end of the game was scary, but Fleury again worked his magic and made an acrobatic stop to keep the Pens ahead and avoid overtime.

The three stars of the game were Staal, Kennedy (Kennedy!) and Fleury, but there could have been others - Scuderi for sure or Orpik, maybe Talbot for his inspired play. This game was just another example of a team playing as one unit and getting the job done.

Stanley was in the house and he saw a great game before he travels back to Detroit for Game Seven. We all saw a great game and I only wish the team from Pittsburgh could take their faithful fans with them to the Motor City.

No big screen outside for the fans tonight – thanks, NBC, for just being plain mean to hockey fans. We’ll remember that.

What more could we ask for than Seventh Heaven to decide the winner of the 2009 Stanley Cup? We needed to stay alive and stay alive we did! I have no idea how I will make it until Friday night, but we’ll have to be patient since we don’t have a choice. Thanks again, NBC!

And thanks, Pens, for an exciting game and the opportunity to see Game Seven!

Stanley Cup Swag OFF: The Finals Edition

Pittsburgh Penguins vs The Detroit Red Wings

Red Wings lead the series 3-2

by Lisa Ovens

Battle of the Tiny Swag

I'm looking at this Red Wings Easter Egg Pin and I'm thinking how come Easter Hockey Swag isn't as big as St. Patrick Day's Hockey Swag? This is one of those tiny, little items that caught my eye while browsing hockey stuff. I found it at the Hockeytown Cafe a few year's ago and couldn't resist its power.

Just as the pin has the power, so do the Detroit Red Wings. After a 5-0 Game Five win, the Winged Wheel Warriors are preparing to end the season tonight in Pittsburgh. Having Pavel Datsyuk back in the line up is a shot in the arm for the Wings, and they are going to hope that the "Reunited and it feels so good" feeling carries over to Game Six. However, there are just a couple of little things to consider...

...the Pittsburgh Penguins are 8-2 on home ice this post season, and that, coupled with strong bounce back skills and an extra 8000 to 10,000 supporters oozing positive energy outside the Igloo, the boys have every chance to push this thrilling series to a seventh game. Game Five saw high scorin' Russian, Evgeni Malkin not scoring, and me thinks that anomaly is just that, an anomaly. Enter the pin..the Evgeni Malkin Drives the Zamboni pin is a fan favorite. (Rumor has it Mario Lemieux wears one, but he takes it off before Sidney gets home for dinner.)

And speaking of Sidney...

If ever there was a game for Captain Sidney Crosby to really, really step it up against last year's Conn Smythe winner, Henrik Zetterberg, today's game is it. It's time to score, Sidney. I think your landlord/ boss man would agree...

And speaking of Mario Lemieux...

How many times have we seen this shot during the Pens Playoff run? Is it just me, or do they look like short order cooks taking a break to watch a bit of a game on TV? Sorry, I just had to get one that out of my system...

Speaking of getting things out of my system...

I had to get some Crazy Bread last week, so I made the trek to Little Caesar's! I hadn't had the stuff in a couple of years. The doughy sticks haven't changed a bit.

Speaking of a couple of years....

It's been a couple of years since this guy on the right played. (I couldn't post a pic of Mario, and not Stevie Y) Steve Yzerman's sitting in Don Cherry's usual spot. Quick...imagine Steve wearing this suit jacket...

Yeah, Yzerman dressed in a Don Cherry suit is about as likely to happen as ooh, I don't know, Mario Lemieux being a short order cook.

And speaking of Don Cherry....he picked the Wings to Repeat as Stanley Cup Champions. Evgeni Malkin's parents beg to differ. I know I'm not ready for it to all end today...

Happy Game Six...everybody!!!

Stanley Cup Final: Game Five, Wings vs. Pens

Turn the Page – Metallica

by Jan Snyder

Now here I am, on the road again. There I am, up on the stage.
Here I go, playing star again.
There I go, turn the page.
Here I am, on the road again. There I am, up on the stage.
Ah here I go, playing star again.
There I go, there I go.

After a game like this, we need some heavy metal to pound in our ears so we can forget this night ever happened. We can dance to this song and do just what it says – turn the page. Get this whoopin’ out of our system and concentrate on Game Six back home.

Kunitz, Gonchar, Malkin, Crosby, Talbot, Dupuis, Adams – on another night this might be the list of goal scorers. But tonight these guys wore a path to the penalty box. Just as in Game Four when the Pens played a most outstanding second period, tonight it was the Wings turn. Before the second ended, it was 5-0 and frustration on the part of the Pens was at an all-time high.

What can we say that was positive about this game? Well, Garon didn’t give up any goals, no one on our team seemed to get hurt, and the guys started out just like the last game. After that, there isn’t much to say except - turn the page! The road has not been a kind place to the Pens during this series. But, home sweet home, that’s where everything is good.

The crowds inside Mellon Arena have been spectacular but those outside have been every bit as good and as loud. But now because of NBC, our terrific fans are shut out of watching the game on the big screen outside. Does that make you angry? Are you, like me, tired of network TV running our sports leagues and demanding when games are played? If so, click here and find out how you can make your voice heard and get our fans their fun back!

Not only do they have a blast outside the Arena, they collect money for the Mario Lemieux Foundation during each game. The fans have fun, are well-behaved, and add so much to the post-game experience as people head for the parking lots. If Versus can let us have the screen, why can’t NBC? Mr. Bettman, speak up for the hockey fans of Pittsburgh!

Okay, now we have two days to regroup and get ready for a raucous, rowdy rumble at the Arena on Tuesday. After that, we can turn the page again and get ready for Game Seven! Stanley will be in the house, but just to watch!

Let’s Go, Pens!!

Stanley Cup Final: Game Four Wings vs. Pens

Eye of the Tiger - Survivor

by Jan Snyder

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the cream of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all in the eye of the tiger

The boys sure were dancin' to this tune tonight! There has been a lot of talk about eyes in this series already. Kris Letang said he can see how much Sid and Geno want to win just by the look in their eyes. Yes, that IS the eye of the tiger. Tonight they again rose up to the challenge of their rival and showed them who was boss.

The Arena was rockin' again as the crowd cheered lustily for the team and spurred them on to another exciting win. Big Ben put in an appearance as did Paul Coffey. I personally think Mario and Paul should have dropped the puck -- that would have reminded us all of the past glory days when those two were hoisting the Cup this time of year.

Geno got all the fun started tonight with a little tap in that got by Osgood and made it 1-0. As has been the way this series has gone, Detroit tied it before the end of the first period when Helm scored.

Then onto a fantastic second period! Things didn't start out so well when Stuart scored in the first minute, but after that, the eye of the tiger got stronger and stronger. Jordan Staal did the same -- he got stronger and stronger, pushed Rafalski out of his way, and slammed home a short-handed goal that was a thing of beauty.

Finally what we've all been waiting for happened when Geno dished a nice pass over to Sid who effectively planted it behind Osgood. In his rush to share the happiness with Sid, Letang bowled him over, but Sid didn't seem to mine. Now it was 3-2 Pens and the place was on fire. Towels waved, grown men screamed, and people generally went nuts.

Staal's line had a big night and to cap it off, there was a nice goal by Tyler Kennedy (Kennedy!) T.K., also known as the Little Tiger, had his own eye of the tiger going tonight. He's played well in this series and it was nice to see him rewarded.

When all was said and done, Sid, Geno and Staal each had a goal and an assist and Hossa was nowhere to be found -- at least on the scoreboard. I loved one of the signs at the Arena that read: Nossa, Hossa! And no sir it was. None of the high octane players for the Wings were able to get loose and score tonight as the Pens were defensive as well as offensive and conintued the big hits. Geno himself had five hits and at times seemed to be all over the ice. He really made a difference in this game.

So my work here is done. I have to head back to Texas and won't get to any more games this year. I'm leaving the rest of the wins in the hands of all of you Pittsburgh fans! Keep rockin' and bring home two more!

Thanks to a great Pens fan, Ashli, who is now living in Hawaii, for suggesting Eye of the Tiger. She is awarded the primary assist for this column.

I'll have my eye on the TV on Saturday night, just like the rest of you. I'll be hoping to see another win, a road win, in Game 5.

Let's Go, Pens!!

Stanley Cup Final: Game Three Wings vs. Pens

Let's Get Physical - Olivia Newton John

by Jan Snyder

A little dancing, a little exercise to work off that pent up energy from this great game! And physical was certainly what the Pens were tonight, dishing out hit after hit against the Wings.

What a treat to take in the game from Mellon Arena and soak up all the fun along the way. I think we've started a new tradition with Mario Lemieux dropping the ceremonial first puck. From the ovation he got, you would have thought he scored a goal! Let' s keep getting the Big Guy involved.

Evgeni Malkin's parents were seated just below us. We got to see first-hard the "rock star" treatment they get from fans after the games. Security finally came and helped them escape, but everyone was so nice, just taking photos and letting them know how much their son is loved.

We passed the great Jeff Jimerson, our anthem singer, after the game as he was also getting as much congratulations as the team.

A new wrinkle was a video made by another team -- the Pittsburgh Steelers! Several of the Steelers, including Hines Ward and James Harrison, are shown at their workout facility. They say that they can't hear the crowd. They start leading the crowd in a rowdy "Let's Go, Pens" chant. In another video, Coach Tomlin fires up the masses too, urging them to get behind the team. Coach Tomlin had a ringside seat right at the glass. Hines, Harrison and one or two other Steelers were in the house too.

Max Talbot scored two goals, bookending the game. His first put the Pens ahead in the first period and his second, an empty-netter, sealed the Wings fate on this night. In between, Letang and Gonchar were able to produce power play goals and the game was ours!

Apparently the Pens played for about 20 seconds with six men, a fact that wasn't noticed or called by the refs. And although we hit a couple of posts, so did the Wings, telling me that the hockey gods are evening things up a little.

But the overriding story of Game Three was the physical play of players like Cooke, Dupuis, and Orpik, among others. They gave out plenty of hits and the crowd loved it when Hossa especially was a recipient of one of the booming checks.

Being at the game and bringing home a win was great! The crowd screamed, chanted, waved their towels and did everything they could possibly do, especially in the last few minutes of the game, to help the team.

If they can keep up the hitting, play the same way they did tonight, and get ahead, Game Four should be just as much fun - so, boys, let's get physical all over again!

Let's Go, Pens!!

Stanley Cup Final: Game Two Pens vs. Wings

Same Old Song – Four Tops

by Jan Snyder

We may as well dance to a little Motown music on our way out of Detroit.

Okay, who ticked off the hockey gods?? Somebody must have as we watched Geno, Sid and Guerin all hit the posts. Isn’t it enough that Osgood is playing out of his mind? But no, we have to have all the bad luck in the world too.

But the guys played well, had their chances, and Geno did what we all wanted to do at the end of the game – beat on Zetterberg! Not only did Zetterberg keep Sid from playing his game, he lay across the goal line to stop a puck from going in. Geno was given a bunch of penalties but the NHL has wisely decided that he won’t be given a suspension.

This game we got the early lead when Geno got credit for the power play goal that was actually knocked in off a Red Wing. Going into the second, we were up but Eriksson, minus his appendix, tied it up and Filppula made it 2-1.

In the third period it was just like déjà vu all over again as Abdelkader scored the goal to make it 3-1, just like in the prior game.
Sid had another great chance that Osgood thought was past him, but that pesky post got in the way.

The Pens sure earned an A for effort tonight, but it just wasn’t to be. But now, it’s home sweet home, the happy, vocal crowd at Mellon Arena, and the opportunity to win Games Three and Four.
I’m thrilled to say that I’ll be among that happy, vocal crowd at Mellon for Games Three and Four. I’ll be landing in Pittsburgh in the afternoon and I’ll be ready for the 8:00 p.m. drop of the puck. Thanks to my daughter, Jen, and her husband, Jim, I have a ticket to see a couple of more Stanley Cup Finals. After last year, I wasn’t sure this would happen again so soon, but I’m sure glad it did! Let’s crank up the noise and welcome the boys back to the ‘burg!

The Pens will be Back in Black, Alive and Kicking, and Living on the Edge for the next two games. They just need to keep on doing what they’ve been doing, working hard and feeding off the crowd. After all, we don’t want to hear that Same Old Song we heard in Detroit.

Let’s Go, Pens!!

Stanley Cup Final: Game One Pens vs. Wings

Feels Like the First TimeForeigner
By Jan Snyder

Isn’t it fantastic to be back in the Stanley Cup Finals? Isn’t it fantastic to have another shot at the Red Wings? Of course it is fantastic, but this first game feels a lot like the first game last year, just with more reasons for optimism.

The Pens stayed right with the Wings, watched some bounces go the Wings way, and kept on fighting right up to the sound of the buzzer. Don’t forget too that the Pens lost the first game against the Caps and that round had a happy ending.

After hockey legends Ted Lindsay and Gordie Howe dropped the ceremonial first puck and the last poor dead octopus was removed from the ice surface, the game began. In the first period there were some big hits, like Orpik on Hossa and Sid on Zetterberg, but Hossa got the last laugh as he pocketed the first goal. Not to be outdone, Fedotenko took advantage of Osgood being on the left side of the net and pushed the puck into the right side to tie it up at one. Things were looking up.

Okay, tied going to the second – here was the Pens’ chance to get out ahead and it almost happened when Geno had a breakaway – but Osgood was too good. Then there was a stampede to the penalty box as Lebda, Samuelsson and Adams all found their way to the sin bin, but none of the penalties resulted in goals. With just 55 or so seconds left, our old nemesis, Franzen, the kicking mule, put the Wings up by one.

Our boys never let up; they kept on fighting for the puck, for their space, for their try at scoring. Abdelkader (where did he come from?) scored again for the Wings and that wrapped it up.

But let me point out that last year, the Pens lost the first game by a score of 4-0, so we improved on that score this game! And in the immortal words of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, “Tomorrow is another day.”

The Wings are the defending champions for a reason and if the Pens want to take that big ol’ trophy back to Pittsburgh, they need to keep doing what they’ve been doing and do it even better! So let’s get Geno some of his mother’s soup, let’s get Fleury a little more help on those bouncy pucks, and let’s cheer on our team and hope they can head back home with the series tied at 1-1.

We liked that feeling the first time and it’s only getting better the second time!

Let’s Go, Pens!!
